Hi all,

Today, I thought it would be fun to share an excerpt from my interactive journal—Everyday Adventures: Tiny Quests to Spark Your Creative Life—on the blog. I've been going on lots of mini adventures in Siskiyou County, and I hope this prompt inspires you to explore your community!

Visit a unique place in your community.

In October 2015, I spent the day wandering around Dunsmuir, CA—a small town near our home in Yreka. I ate good food, went to Hedge Creek Falls, and unexpectedly stopped at the Dunsmuir City Park.

The detour was worth my time because the Dunsmuir City Park has a charming botanical garden and a walking trail that runs along the Sacramento River. It was a stunning fall day, and I felt like I'd walked into a postcard. The golden aspen leaves were falling off the trees and people were scattered along the river fishing.

In the afternoon, I attended the Dunsmuir Art Walk. Most of the storefronts—even the stores that are usually closed and empty—were open and filled with art. Seeing so many people exploring the little town of Dunsmuir made me happy. The day was inexpensive, magical, and memorable.

Are there unique places or spaces in your community that you haven’t visited? Make a list of those places and visit one or two sites this month. If you’re able to visit more places, that’s great! If not, save your list for future adventures.

If you aren’t sure what sites to visit, here are a few ideas:

  • Attend an art walk
  • Go to a local museum
  • Try a new restaurant or café
  • Ask locals for hiking tips

Finally, pay attention to your surroundings. If you see something interesting, like a park or a cool café, take a detour and explore.
