11 Ideas to Overcome Writing Blocks
Yesterday, I exchanged a few text messages with my writing buddy, and I asked if she had any blog topic requests. She wanted me to blog about “writing blocks or something along the lines of ‘getting out of your own way.’”
Below are a few actions—in no particular order—that I use to overcome writing blocks. I hope they help you too!
2. Make a mind-map in your journal (see my messy mind-map above).
3. If you don't have a journaling practice in place, start by creating a logbook.
4. Embrace a non-linear writing style. Sometimes the introduction might be the last thing you write—whether it's for a short essay or a book—and that's okay! Get your ideas on paper.
5. Write what author Anne Lamott calls a “shitty first draft” first. Worry about edits later.
6. Go for a walk or try CrossFit. A long nature walk is an excellent way to clear your mind and switch from focused to diffuse thinking. CrossFit is also a great way to release anxiety, get stronger, and feel like a badass. As a bonus, I usually leave the gym with writing ideas percolating.
7. If you have trouble sitting in a chair while writing for long periods of time, set up a standing desk or dictate the first draft into your smartphone while walking around your neighborhood.
8. Start a blog and write something there daily.
9. If you're still stuck with writing, switch to a different writing project. If you come back to the article or book and are still struggling, considering ditching the concept or begin again with a new angle. Not all ideas are gold.
10. Become a better reader, take notes, and read more than you write. For example, last night I started reading What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty. Moriarty’s novel has nothing to do with my work life, and that’s a good thing.
11. Read. Write. Read more. And do it all again.
