A Snuggle Mate for My Tiny House

I'm obsessed with wool, and I blame Logan for this. He did his grad school research with sheep, and he turned me onto the benefits of wool clothing, such as its breathability, comfort, durability, and resilience. My obsession with wool has even branched out beyond clothing. For example, the insulation in our tiny house is wool. It was a little more expensive than traditional insulation, but it's not toxic, and it's kept us warm in the winter and cool during hot California summers.

Also, when we moved to Portland, Oregon in January 2010, we purchased a queen-sized mattress stuffed with wool. It's been a great mattress, but after 5 years, unfortunately, it has become compressed and hard. Rock Soft Futon, where we purchased the mattress, offers a free refurbishing service. However, they are located in Portland, and taking advantage of this service isn’t an option.

So, we started researching mattress toppers. Unfortunately, most of the toppers we found online were made with nasty chemicals. They were less expensive compared to wool toppers, but we didn't want to spend our money on a flame retardant chemical-filled mattress topper.

Thankfully, we found a better option. Last week, we bought a three-inch wool Snuggle Mate from a company called Shepherd’s Dream. The company is based in Montague, CA, near our home, and the wool comes from sheep raised in Roseburg, Oregon. Shepherd’s Dream makes beds, toppers, pillows, blankets, bed frames, and more.

I feel good about supporting a local company. Also, the topper is amazing to sleep on! I feel like we bought a whole new bed. And honestly, isn't the name—Snuggle Mate—the best ever?

With gratitude,
