The Year of Less: Personal Notes & A Giveaway

Last year, I had the honor of reading my friend Cait Flanders’s new book—The Year of Less! It’s a beautiful memoir, and it made me want to be braver in my writing and life. Cait’s words also encouraged me to reexamine my spending and savings habits. For example, my husband and I decreased our food and dining expenses in 2017, but we didn’t reach our goal of spending $400 a month on food! This year, we’re determined to make that happen, and we’d like to save 50% of our income!

Saving 50% of our income seems like a crazy, insurmountable challenge. However, we’re in a good position to make this aim a reality because our rent and utilities are inexpensive, we share a car, don’t have a car payment, and we paid off our debt years ago. Saving more isn’t meant to be an exercise in austerity. Rather, it’s about mindfulness and keeping the long game in mind. Even if we don’t reach our goal, I know we’ll learn a lot about money and ourselves in 2018.

To save extra money in 2018, we’ll be following the steps Cait outlines in her book and planner. Also, we won’t be shopping online. The Internet is an incredible resource, and I love sites like Amazon.com. However, it’s so easy to overspend online.

If you’re thinking about saving more in 2018, doing a spending ban, or creating a mindful budget, explore the books and websites listed below:

The Year of Less by Cait Flanders.

Your Money or Your Life by Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez was an incredibly helpful resource when we began simplifying our lives.

Early Retirement Extreme by Jacob Lund Fisker—portions of Fisker’s book didn’t resonate with me. However, the how-to sections were inspiring and helpful!

Money: Master the Game by Tony Robbins is a giant book and helpful. The book helped me work through some of my money issues, and I learned a lot about the finance world. Also, Robbins pointed readers to a website called Get Your Shit Together. It’s a valuable website, and it prompted us to complete our living will and power of attorney documents. The process was simple, straightforward, and if something happens to me, Logan will be able to access our assets.

— Mr. Money Mustache’s blog is a fantastic resource!

— Helpful apps & websites: Mint | EveryDollar | Personal Capitol

Finally, Cait generously offered to give a copy of her book to one lucky reader!

I am grateful for surviving 2017. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in october of 2016, started chemo just before christmas, finished that in april, went through radiation, had a modified radical mastectomy in july. Came back to my old self at tne end of september and havent looked back. I am grateful for my loving husband of 41 years for taking such good care of me, my dad and brother and friends for their unwavering love and support, and the BC Cancer Clinic for their wonderful medical support.

Thanks for sharing your goal! It’s really a big one. I would like to find ways to do the same. My best advice to live feeling free an “sustainable”, so far (that has worked wonders in our lives) is make a living without debts, any kind of them. I don’t even have a credit card! That way we just spend what we have and have been able to save through the years to invest in some goods that help us to increase our income. It has been a slow journey, but is a valuable one. My goal now is to return to a simplier live, and to find a way to tidy up lots of things that make me feel heavier than I want. If I can also save money to retire younger… it would be a win-win equation

  • K Griffin January 16, 2018, 8:27 am

I’m grateful for my baby girl, and that I’m able to stay home with her. Similarly I’m grateful that my husband is able to work from home so we spend as much time together as a family as possible. It’s the most important thing in my life, to spend time with the people I love, and similarly to you guys, we were able to make this a reality because we live in a small apartment, we own our cars (I’d love to go down to one but that’s a challenge for another year!), we’ve worked to curb our entertainment and dining expenses, and are lucky to have no debt. There are certainly things that we’ve let go of in exchange (pouring all our resources into advancing careers), but we’re more grateful for our time than mournful of income lost.

I’m grateful that I am of a growth mindset and know that it is time to move on from my career as it does not fulfill me as it used to do. Also, that as I continue to simplify my life of possessions and other things that do not serve me anymore, I will see if a move is in order to fulfill my future ambitions and that will be a lot less of a hassle with fewer things to carry! I am grateful for the security of life’s necessities – and luxuries – and the love of a partner who supports and challenges me. Without these things, I would not be where I am today, embracing slow living and, honestly, more fulfilled by, proud of, and confident in who I am than I’ve ever been. Working towards minimalism & zero waste has taught me so much about myself and the world. At the same time, it has necessitated that I work constantly to improve both of those things while staying positive, humble, and kind.

I am grateful for many reasons, first at my sweet tender age that I am in great health, that I can make choices and work. As a widow, i am grateful that my husband left me with a beautiful home and some assets. I am most grateful for my daughter and my dog. Who could believe how valuable one kiss, a hug from anyone special in my life i might share a special moment, a phone call and company. How we forget the simple things of life mean so much. I am grateful for my friends who r my brothers/sisters that support me. I am grateful to have my senses to see, think, hear and taste. I am grateful to express empathy to others which allow me to know how grateful I am to live well.

It always amazes me (and makes me incredibly grateful) knowing that we have such access when in other countries it is highly regulated and some areas aren’t even free to do a basic ‘google’ search without it being intervened.
