On Photography & Project 333

35th bday

In September 2013, I enrolled in a course called Urban Explorer Photography. It’s a SkillShare class taught by Cubby Graham and I loved it. Part of the class included creating your own photography project. I decided to focus my energy on My Morning View photography series. The class helped me look at photography in a new way and it gave me the courage to create my photography book.

In early December 2013, I received a surprising email from a staff member at SkillShare. He told me that my class project was selected as a the top project, and as a result I won a $500 Levi’s gift card. Initially, I didn’t believe the email was real because I was so surprised!

For the last five years, I’ve worn lots of black clothing (black leggings, black dresses, black shirts, and black coats). I was tired of wearing black all the time and wanted to add more color to my little wardrobe. So, the Levi’s gift card arrived at the perfect time.

A few months ago, I visited Portland to reconnect with friends and while I was in town I stopped at the Levi’s store. Thankfully, my friend Jolie came to the store with me. If it weren’t for Jolie — and an amazing Levi’s salesperson — I wouldn’t have spent the gift card. I don’t have much fashion sense and shopping overwhelms me, so I was grateful for their help. I left the store with two pairs of blue jeans, one cotton scarf, a beautiful purple jacket, and five blouses. I adore my new wardrobe. It’s been nice wearing colorful clothing and to finally own comfortable blue jeans.

When it comes to my wardrobe, I follow Project 333 guidelines. For example, three-quarters of my clothes are neatly stored in my closet. I rotate through my clothing based on the season or if I buy something new.

At one time, I had enough clothing to fill up our little house. Now, I have a super small wardrobe that is filled with clothes I love to wear. Plus, I don’t spend 30 minutes each day trying to decide what to wear. And, that makes me happy.

Be well,
Tammy

P. S. I will be posting photos of my tiny wardrobe on Instagram. Follow along if you want to see my outfits. Also, Courtney Carver offers a fantastic course called Dress with Less. If you want to downsize your closet, I highly recommend this class.

I love project 333, have been doing it for a year now, and love the mental calmness that comes with having less to choose from. I do find it a challenge sometimes that items get worn out much faster because they are used more and washed more.. you struggle with the same thing, or am I to hard on my clothes?:) ..bonus is it’s feels great to throw something away that is literally falling apart:)

@Maria – My leggings get worn out fast. I actually need to buy some new ones. Overall, my clothes have held up well. 🙂

I was struggling to find an affordable mobile phone photography course in London (two days for £500!)…thanks for rescuing me with Cubby’s course tip. And I’ve just moved into my teeny tiny study and had to put a heap of clothing on ebay, so I’m checking out the 333 principles too. Thanks Tammy x

I also have very few items of clothing. When I look in my closet most of them are also really old. But still they look good. Not sure what my “approach” is but I don’t seem to wear out clothes very much.
I bought some really nice winter boots when I came here in 1997 and I still wear them. Of course they do not look like they did then but they still work very well. And the soles are starting to get some wear so I need to get new ones soon.
Something I don’t do is use a dryer, but instead I let my clothes air dry. That gives extra life to clothes for sure.
Great about your project that was chosen. 🙂

Thanks for the heads up about the SkillShare photography classes! These look great. I’m passing on the links to Grant to check out, too. We bought a new camera as our shared Christmas gift to each other – a Nikon V2 – and are having a blast taking our photography up to a new level. I admit I still use my iPhone camera for most of my day-to-day shots, but we’re weaving in as many photo adventures with our new camera as we can. 🙂
