Something Fun: A Book Giveaway

by Tammy Strobel on October 3, 2012

A few weeks ago I gave away a few copies of my new book, You Can Buy Happiness (and it’s Cheap). I was blown away by your comments because they were so awesome!

Since I have extra books sitting on my shelf, I thought it would be fun to giveaway three more signed and stamped copies of You Can Buy Happiness (and it’s Cheap). To participate in the giveaway, simply leave a comment at the bottom of this post and tell me about three tiny pleasures that make you happy. For example, I love sitting on my front porch drinking coffee in the morning, taking an evening bike ride, and reading a new book.

I’ll announce the winners on Monday, October 8th.

Have a great day!

P. S. In addition to my real life book tour, I’ve been touring the virtual world too. It’s been a lot of fun writing articles and participating in interviews. Check out the tour by clicking here.

Update: Comments are closed. I’ll pick the winners on Sunday evening, through, and announce them on Monday.

Three tiny pleasures that make me happy…
* Waking before the sun opens the sky for the morning, and watching it unfold
* Feeling the soft warm breezes of Autumn
* Lying under an open window, looking up into the star-filled night and realizing that it’s the perfect illuminated blanket for the depth of darkness of the night sky.

Thank you for helping me remember some of these many gifts I’ve been given in my life.

Many thanks,

I love the way my dog wakes me up each morning, watching the sun rise and set from my porch, and seeing & enjoying the change of seasons. I think it’s important to stop and appreciate the simple things in our lives….we miss so much if we don’t!

35 Vicki October 3, 2012

I have almost finished reading the library copy of your book and I want to say that your book is AWESOME! I say this because I love the content, writing style and your journey reflects some of mine therefore it totally resonates with me. It is kind of ironic how much of your story reflects where I am at. I also like the resources, many of which I have put on hold at the library. I would like to own a copy to pass on to a few of my friends as I have been telling them for a week now how much I am loving this book :)
My 3 tiny pleasures are: 1. weekends where I wake up and my life is so uncluttered that I turn to my husband and baby and say “what shall we do today”?…every single day of the weekend and Monday too!

Thank you!

Hi Tammy, Your stories, photos and blog have been inspiring. I am having a wee Irish cottage built and have found a place to park it when it is done. I live on San Juan Island in WA state and it has been a beautiful journey prepping for tiny living. I currently live/camping in a square outbuilding (my office) with no plumbing. The “motherland” as I call the island, has brought me so much joy and the community up here is already self sustaining. There is so much sharing, bartering, growing organic food, and with many like minded spirits, I can hardly wait to show off my little dwelling. I think there might be a parade to the site, when the house wheels off the ferry, hopefully, but the end of October! I would love your book. I would share it with many…

144 Signa October 3, 2012

I love the title of your book — I’ve been saying something similar for a couple of years, so I’m now dying to read your book. So…..3 of my simple pleasures:

1. Owning my tiny home with no mortgage. It is 780 sq. feet of pure, unadulterated, comfy pleasure.
2. Knowing my husband embraces the simple life as much as I do. We are such kindred spirits, it is comforting to know that we have such common goals and values.
3. Inspiring others to live simply. My mother-in-law wrote the other day to say that we’d inspired her. She is going to sell her house and move back to her childhood town where she’s wanted to be for many years. After watching us, she’s decided she doesn’t want to wait to love where she is. And our friends all agree that they could live like this — and some have begun sharing with us how they are downsizing, and making changes (career changes, spending changes, belief changes). It’s so exciting!

i have to say that the three things that give me the most pleasure are as follows: 1. morning coffee with my mother and neice on the patio, sometimes with goodies i have made for everyone. 2. greeting my neighbors on the way to work and on the way home, and playing with their pets. 3. the thing that gives me the most joy is volunteering to feed and clothe the homeless at our local mission and soup kitchen. to see the smiles on their faces and getting kind comments from these people is the most heartwarming feeling. i have witnessed some pretty horrible things happening to my homeless friends and i need to fight every day to make sure it doesn’t continue. sometimes i feel overwhelmed, but then i stop, breathe, and remember how easy my life is compared to theirs. if they can walk for hours and hours in the harsh elements with all they own, i can walk to the laundromat to wash their clothes or walk to the store to make sure they are fed. keeps me young. 😉

I was so cranky this morning. Walking out to my studio, a little yellow and black garter snake slithered across the path and made me smile.
Wisps of fog drifting across the garden on “little cat feet”, reminds me of my mother, who died 18 years ago, and always quoted that poem when the fog came in.
A shy toddler who looks up while holding onto her mother’s knees in line in front of me at the post office, and then smiles a pure beaming smile- always makes me happy.

199 Greg Watson October 3, 2012

1. As the sun rises, it’s rays slowly flood down the mountains opposite the valley. I love to stand with a cup of coffee warming my hands and watch, as the Homer put it in the Illiad, ‘the rosy fingers of dawn’ massage the gentle hills…

2.When I am hot and covered in sweat and sawdust, I like to mosey, yes, mosey, down to the creek and dive in, then just stand there as the swallows dart overhead and feel the current of the water slowly taking the heat from my body, until I am just a bit chilled, and I can face again the heat of mid-day.

3. At the end of the day, after rinsing in the creek, I take a beer and my lover to the porch and watch the sun slip behind the mountains that it has warmed all day, and I bury my face in my lover’s hair and take in her scent, something that never ceases to stir my soul…..

Spending 1 hour to clean the entire house, making more time to really live.
Feeling hugely satisfied with so much less.

I take a lot of pleasure in seeing what others have done with small homes … My family of 4 lives in less than 500 square feet and seeing how others organize their space inspires me to improve upon what we can do to better utilize our space.

I take a lot of pleasure in de-cluttering / moving things on to new homes. I started this well before living in 500 square feet and I am always amazed how passing things along is so satisifying.

I take a lot of pleasure stepping outside my front door to … the night sky … the autumn leaves … the spring flowers … the glorious summer day. I know this sounds dorky, but I live in the country so that I can appreciate the simplicity of nature instead of the hustle and bustle of the city.

Through the years we have worked hard at simplifying our life. I am always looking for other ways to simplify more and I am inspired when I see other people on similar paths.

3 true little moments of pure bliss:
Bedtime with my daughters as my oldest falls asleep sucking her tongue while the youngest nurses
Going to bed at night and thinking I am now able to just completely fully relax and let my mind wander freely
Waking up in the morning and falling right back to sleep because I just realize I can!

332 Michael October 3, 2012

3 tiny pleasures that make me happy?
Walking in the rain (yes I use an umbrella)
hugging my children
seeing how someone’s face brightens up when you ask “how can I help?”

If I’m selected can you donate the book to your local library please?

333 Rie October 3, 2012

I have lots of small simple pleasures but these are new ones: reading with my students who are naturally so funny; off-grid living (shall I include a hot shower and lights with that?!) My man’s attention (that definitely includes massages and his excellent organic cooking!).

334 Ekta October 3, 2012

Namaste Tammy,
Congratulation of your book. My blessings are with you.

Three of the tiny pleasures that make me happy:
1. Waking up early morning with Bhajans.
I am from India, Bhajans are Indian devotional song. It’s beautiful to start my day with God and positive affirmation.
2. When i sleep there is no noise from outside. Peace, silent and still.
3. My pet dog, Coco. He passed away on 3rd Jan, 2010. He still brings me joy and profound happiness.
One look at his picture all worries and tensions melts away. It’s going to be 3 years this January. I still find reasons to love him more.

Love and Peace

337 Chris October 3, 2012

My 3 tiny pleasures are:
1. A very warm, nearly hot, washcloth at the end of the day, scented with essential oil, and placed over my entire face. I lay down and relax for 2 minutes, breathing in the calming scent, and as it cools, clear my mind of thought.
2. Journaling every morning with coffee before I turn on the computer. Since taking your class I’m finding that by giving myself permission to begin my day with pen and notebook, my days are less stressful and I’m able to keep and find all those bits later in the day when I need them. I write about story ideas and the weather, the day before’s simple pleasures and knitting patterns to create, recipes and tasks to attempt, goals accomplished and random thoughts that make me smile.
3. Setting my timer for 5 minutes. It seems silly, and not much time, but as soon as I reach for my timer I get a thrill of anticipation. When I start the timer I race through doing one thing I’ve been putting off, challenging myself to get as much done as I can as fast as I can. As soon as the timer goes off I stop. That’s when the smiles start as I see just how much I can accomplish when I set to a task with a will and focused energy.

2. a square of dark chocolate
3. hand-knit wool socks

The wonderful damp, earthy, leafy, fresh-air smell I enjoy when riding horseback in the woods on rainy Fall Days.

468 Claire October 4, 2012

Three tiny pleasures:

Singing along to Beatles songs, no make-up days and the smell of lavender.

469 E.B. October 4, 2012

Three simple pleasures:

1) Feeding the birds. Right outside the living room windows I have a feeder, and I’ll also place seeds along the porch railing; it makes me happy to see a line of chickadees, finches, tufted titmouses (titmice?) and other birds lined up in a row enjoying the seeds.

2) Cleaning the windows with a non-toxic mix of vinegar and water. Might sound ridiculous, but having a clear view to the outside while I’m at my computer is a pleasure (and makes it all the easier to see the birds).

3) I’m a night owl; if the sky is clear I’ll spend some time outside trying to learn the constellations in the night sky.

3. When I meet a new dog who’s straining eagerly against their leash to say hello :)

472 Tony Mindling October 4, 2012

Wow, this will be the 426th comment to this post, and it is only the 4th of October! Tammy, you will have a big job choosing. And I’m not even expecting this to be read, let alone being one of the chosen three comments – I see it as an opportunity to express those things I am hugely grateful for during a trying time. You see, five weeks ago my wife and I acquired two Shih Tzu puppies – 8-week-old brothers Joey and Mickey. For nearly a month we enjoyed their exuberant joy as they explored all aspects of their expanding world, through all of their senses. The greatest joy was seeing how they shared that joy together, as if they were a single creature under one skin. But tragedy struck – “dietary indiscretion”, said the vet – a twig or other object that created internal bleeding, and we lost Mickey Tuesday after three days in the hospital. We are thunderstruck with grief, but nevertheless immediately decided that Joey needed a buddy. And so 8-week old “Buddy” entered out lives. Although grief for Mickey is deep, these small pleasures are helping me along:
1. Opening their kennel in the morning to watch them burst out and continue embracing the joy of life;
2. Watching the sweet and gently pleasure that Joey takes in his new “brother”; and,
3. Watching the joy my wife takes in 1. and 2.

473 Tammy Strobel October 4, 2012

@Tony – I’m reading all the comments. They are wonderful! I’m going to choose the winners through

Also, I’m so sorry to hear about your puppy. I’m glad that you got Joey a new buddy. :)

We have been staging (simplifying/decluttering/organizing) to sell our 3300 square foot house. I have my eye on the Tumbleweed Enesti floorplan (900-ish square feet), and have started daydreaming about it (I’m so sick I made a Pinterest board for it), so even if I don’t win a copy that you give away, I am ordering one on Amazon!
Many blessings to you as you make your home!

Once everybody has left the house for the day. I sit on the couch, my dog curl next to me and then I slowly sip and savor a big cup of coffee. It’s like the world is a better and calm place in an instant, and If I’m lucky there are some finches by the bird-feeder.

488 Robin Muff October 4, 2012

Little things that make us happy are often the things we take for granted. Sometimes the little things are what enable us to make it through the tough times. Little things can be big things! Some “little things” that are very important to my happiness are: 1. when my husband comes home (he always honks the horn to announce his arrival because he is happy too) 2. when my teenage daughter comes home from her job 3) being able to pet our cats and dogs and enjoy our chickens that always bring a smile to my face 4) and, of course, my complete rest in God!

I am so pleased for you that you got your tiny house. I have been busy planning our own downsizing lifestyle and freedom and recently attended a workshop with Deek. Yippppppeeeeee! Go, Tiny, Go!

P.S. Of course I really hope you pick me to get a free book!

I live in the mountains of northern New Mexico. Every day I get up before sunrise and walk in the forest with a friend and my two dogs. As the sun rises, we curl into cups of good Italian coffee and interesting conversation. Can’t think of any pleasures I love more than these.

1) I love sitting outside (in the fall especially) watching people in their daily lives while drinking a foamy, rich latte.
2) I love to watch my chickens be chickens. Their antics and personalities are fun and fascinating.
3) I love it when my honey-bunny looks at me with loving, kind eyes (which is often).

I would love a copy of your book. :)
